COLLEGE BOOT CAMP

August 1st and 2nd, 2 – 4:30 pm

Taught by Joan Thomas, a top college admissions counselor, College Boot Camp is an interactive workshop that will guide incoming seniors through the entire college application process. In today’s fast-moving and competitive world, students face a confusing and complex process in gaining an acceptance letter from the college of their choice.  Understanding how the process works, determining the best fit, both personally and academically, and creating a realistic action plan are key to navigating college admissions requirements.

Topics will include:

  • GPA Calculations for CSU/UC and private colleges and how to determine academic fit
  • CSU Applications
  • UC Applications
  • Private Colleges and navigating the Common Application

COLLEGE ESSAY WORKSHOP

June 6th, 4 – 6 pm  OR  Aug 2nd, 4:30 – 6:30 pm

The Common Application, University of California and Coalition Application have confirmed the essay prompts for the Fall 2018 application season. Students will complete a variety of exercises to identify and develop essay options, explore prompts, and consider topics.  Past essay examples will be reviewed to understand style and length. Students will draft their essays and receive feedback and editing suggestions until the essay is complete.

STEPS TO COLLEGE

Steps is fortunate to partner with Joan Thomas and Collegemapping.com to offer students access to the best college counseling in the area. Steps to College, taught by Joan Thomas, is an excellent opportunity for your student to take charge of their own academic future. In the class, students will go through an intense 90-minute workshop three times per year to help develop — and stay focused on — their college dreams. To ensure that students get the most up-to-date information, Joan visits 40 colleges and attends 5 regional and national conferences for college counselors every year.

Topics: College prep course planning, resume building, college research, interest assessment, and visiting colleges.


Grade 11
College planning (validating course planning and making calculations for college applications), assessment testing to help discover options for college majors, building a college research list, and prepping for applications
